Podcasts : Episode #10 – Keep The Fire Burning

 Tuesday, January 31st 2006, 10:59 pm

In the words of Disco Four (from their track “Get Busy”):

The scratch. The bass. The congas in your face. The King of the beats gonna rock the place!

The King of the Beats is here with podcast episode #10. Make your ears happy and download it here:

[podcast direct download] | [podcast RSS feed]

As always, here is the tracklisting for the show:

  • DJ Cruze chart rundown:
  • Cruze classic from 1991:
    • The House Crew – Keep The Fire Burning – Production House

As I mentioned in the show I’ve been downloading some more podcasts for my iPod and here are two you should definitely check out if you like house music:

  • Alex Harmony – Der Harmonizer ist im Haus! Alex is rocking a funky tech-electro sound with a classic thrown in for good measure. Even if you don’t speak German it’s worth a download. He said he might do the next in English anyway so keep subscribed.
  • One Phat DJ – He’s phat not fat! Funky tunes with a similar taste in music to me. A must have on your iPod.

As always I love to hear your feed back on the show. Contact me using the form provided and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. I’m always looking for new tunes to play on the show so if you’re an up and coming producer who’s looking for some exposure then let me know and if I like the tunes then I’ll play them.

News : Emails, webhosts and stuff

 Tuesday, January 24th 2006, 12:59 pm

I’m finally back in the land of the living and catching up with my emails. Apologies to anyone who has emailed me since Christmas and I haven’t replied yet. I’ve had a major amount of work to do and have not managed to clear the backlog of emails that I’ve had. I’ll be done by the weekend I hope so expect a reply soon. I love hearing from readers of the site and listeners to the podcast so get in touch.

Dreamhost are a dreamy webhost!

Have you all managed to download episode #9 of the podcast then? This is the first podcast that I’ve moved onto my new webhost so I wanted to check that everything is ok. Let me know if you have problems downloading and I’ll get it sorted. If anyone need a new webhost for their site then I would highly recommend Dreamhost.

They give you 20GB of webspace and 1TB per month of bandwidth! Hopefully I won’t be exceeding that just yet but the rate of listeners that I’m getting per month, you never know! They also have a great web interface for managing your site and allow you to host unlimited domains. In short – they rock!

So what else am I up to then? Well I’m preparing some articles for the website for you to help all of the budding DJs, producers and podcasters get up and running. Hopefully you’ll find something useful in there and there will be some useful information. I’m also working on a track at the moment which I’m hoping to get finished before the next podcast. I’ll then make it available for people to download and use. Some of you DJs out there will be able to get it into your funky house and electro sets I think. If you can think of anything that you need help with then get in touch and let me know.

Podcasts : Episode #9 – La Rock 01

 Wednesday, January 18th 2006, 11:10 pm

Guest mix by Matt Brooks from A&E
Happy new year and welcome to the first podcast for 2006. Podcast episode #9 features a special guest mix from my good friend and fellow DJ, Matthew Brooks. Matt is a DJ and promoter of the excellent Accident and Emergency collective. It’s something a bit different for the podcast as it flows from dirty electro house and filthy acid madness, right up to some drum and bass but as always it’s damn funky! Download it here:

Here is the tracklisting for this week’s show:

As always I love to hear your feed back on the show. Contact me using the form provided and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Big thanks to Matt for his mix and if you want to check out what the A&E crew are up to then go and check the website.

Another DJ Cruze old mix is online! It’s only from 2002 but it’s a good one (…well I like it anyway!). Apologies that I can’t remember the name of every tune that is on there. I tend to just put tunes into the mix and not remember the name of them. I’ve got far too many white labels and promos with vague titles on them but I’ll try and find out the names for you in case you want to buy them. If you know the names of the tunes that I’ve forgotten then get in touch. I hope you enjoy the mix. Yes, I have put S-Club 7 in the mix. Don’t hate me! It’s a great funky remix from Harry “Choo Choo” Romero! 😉

I’m still having problems with my webhost so you’ll get some other mixes from the 90s really soon. As you saw from the picture of my box full of tapes I have a lot to upload for you. How about one a month? Or maybe two if you’re really lucky! Also, the podcast will be online by Wednesday 18th January too as long as the webhost issues have stopped! As I mentioned last week I have got provisions for moving it to a new host so I’ll sort that out this week and the FTP access problems should go away.

News : R.I.P. Mark Spoon

 Monday, January 16th 2006, 4:43 pm

Mark Spoon, 1966 - 2006
I found out late last week that Mark Spoon (real name Markus Löffel) was found dead in his home. I meant to post something about this last week but didn’t get the chance. He was only 41 and died of a heart attack. He’s probably most famous for being a big (in both senses of the word!) trance DJ and for writing classic tunes like “Stella” (from the “Tales from a Danceographic Ocean” EP) with Jam El Mar as Jam & Spoon and as Storm with the tune “Time To Burn”. If you don’t know “Stella” then get hold of it as it’s a classic. Here are some stories about his death:

Mark Spoon
Another page about his death (in German) (and translated to English).

[update]: The Times (UK) Obiturary

Other than his earlier stuff, I wasn’t a particularly big fan of his music as it’s a lot tougher than the sort of stuff I play. His music was quite tough trance and techno but always very musical. I think that his reputation proceeded him and he lived life to the full. I know that anyone who saw him DJ said that he knew how to rock a party but if you talked to him he had a bad attitude. He was also know to have a very dusty mixer (if you get what I mean!). I still think it’s a sad loss when someone so young dies though, especially when they shaped the music that you listened to. Perhaps it’ll be a wake up call to a lot of people in the dance music scene who have their faces stuck in various class A substances a lot of the time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those people who is anti-drugs or anything as it would be hypocritical of me to comment (after my eventful youth)! But as the saying goes “everything in moderation” and I know that he was not known for his moderation.

I’ll dig “Stella” out for the next podcast so you lot can enjoy his music too. Rest in peace man.

News : Podcast is back

 Thursday, January 12th 2006, 7:03 pm

Right then the webserver which hosts the MP3s for the podcast seems to be alive again. Fingers crossed that it will stay that way for the immediate future. My backup plan will spring into action at the weekend anyway so I’ll be a happy DJ! The next podcast should be online by Wednesday 18th January 2006 but I’ll hopefully have something else for you at the weekend.

News : Podcast problems part II

 Thursday, January 12th 2006, 11:21 am

I’ve heard nothing back from the technical support of the company who host my podcast so it’s probably time for drastic action. I’m busy sorting out a different server to host the audio and it should come online by the end of the week. Apologies for everyone who’s come to the site expecting to find my podcast and mixes. They will be back online soon.
