Today I’m celebrating my 34th birthday (yes, I’m really that old!) Well, strictly speaking I did a lot of celebrating last night and hence I have a rather sore head today. If you’re ever in the Manchester area then check out a great little cocktail bar called Socio Rehab in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. It’s an awesome, dark and dingy little bar that does fantastic cocktails. Plenty of fun was had by everyone and our wallets are a lot emptier for their London-style drinks prices!

Anyway, what better cure for a hangover than to make a funky house music mix for you guys. Hopefully I can hold the mixing together.

Tracklisting:

  1. Tony Cha Cha vs Mark Simmons – Somebody Else (Rockefella Dub) – Spinnin’
  2. Soul Avengerz – Love You Feel – Opaque Music
  3. High Life feat. Karime Kendra – Mercy On Me (Main Mix) – Onephatdeeva
  4. Kid Massive feat. Tiger Lilly – Bring It On – Blow Media
  5. Steve Angello & Dave Armstrong – Groove In You – Opaque Music
  6. Ben Macklin – Feel Together – Serial Recordings

  9. Macca – Ride Me Baby – Blowmedia
  10. Ian Carey & Mochico feat. Miss Bunty – Say What U Want (Dub) – Nero
  11. DJ Cruze presents The Funkfinders – Cease! – White

It’s in a nice CD-burnable 128kbps MP3 which has a running time of around 70 minutes. So download it, burn it to a CD and play it LOUD! Happy Birthday from me to you! ;)

News : Essential house music mixes

 Friday, April 21st 2006, 5:30 pm

You need these mixes and podcasts in your life because they are filled with the best funky house music around. I’ve mentioned them before but they’re worth talking about again. I needed to get my head down today and do some serious work, so I stuck my ipod on and got down to these funky mixes:

  • DJ Dyslexic – A San Francisco DJ that I’m hoping to get on the show. He hits us up with the funky house music every Sunday with his “Cure for the Common Sunday” on XTC Radio. His mixes vary in length from an hour to a massive four hour marathon and often feature special guest mixes. Essential listening.
  • Evil Rabbit – Rob Tarren and Andy Wallington supply you with funky house music, dirty breaks beats, quality mixing and stunning voiceovers!
  • One Phat DJ – His latest “Beats for Easter” mix is awesome! This is another mix with great voiceovers too! Haha!
  • DJ Flin – Fancy some old school UK garage (or speed garage as we used to call it)? Rumbling basslines aplenty here with his latest mix. Get your lighters out!

Do you know of any other mixes I should be listening to? Comment below if you have found anything that I should be rocking out to.

News : Four to the Dance Floor

 Friday, April 21st 2006, 8:00 am

As I mentioned in the latest podcast, I had a nice email from a guy from America called Lubo Dobrev. He said he was loving the podcast and the he was writing a fictional novel which involved DJ’ing. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? It’s called “Four to the Dance Floor” and it takes us on a “thought-provoking journey through the world of business and pleasure.”

A summary of the book from Lubo’s website:

Four to the Dance Floor is the story of two roommates, Nico Gressens and Andy Clifford, and their adventures in the business world. Nico is a Dutchman, schooled in the ways of finance in America, while Andy is an African American from the South, eager to climb the corporate ladder.

While closing a business deal, Nico is involved in a horrific car accident. He is fortunate to survive. He quits his Wall Street banking job and becomes what he always dreamed of: a DJ that spins dance music in New York.

Meanwhile, Andy’s career is about to come to a dramatic end. His employer, a high-tech telecom company, announces massive job cuts and Andy fears he will be laid-off the following day.

What follows is an action-packed global business epic that shatters idealistic values and unlocks the secrets of ego-driven executives. There are players that want to make Andy a pawn in their corrupt corporate game, and it is up to Nico to make all the right moves.

From the nightclub to the boardroom, from North to South America, Four to the Dance Floor is a book that takes the reader on a humorous and thought-provoking journey through the world of business and pleasure.

Sounds like an interesting book to me so I’m going to check out his free chapters and see if it lives up to the hype. Check out the free chapters here yourself and let me know what you think.

Podcasts : Episode #14 – Cease!

 Friday, April 21st 2006, 2:30 am

It’s been far too long hasn’t it? After darkness comes light, and sad times bring happy memories and brighter days. Hopefully I can spread some sunshine into your life with the latest DJ Cruze funky house music podcast.

This podcast is dedicated to my grandad. I’m sure he’d have hated house music, if he knew what it was. He was much happier listening to an Irish classic by The Dubliners but I’m sure he would have appreciated the sentiment. I hope he’s having an Irish whiskey up there!

Here you go:

News : Podcast competition winner

 Wednesday, April 19th 2006, 9:48 pm

The winner of the inaugral DJ Cruze “dance to my podcast and take a photo” podcast competition had to be:

Representing the Brissie Massive!
Craig from the Brisbane Massive

Craig sadly didn’t wear the leotard that he promised but he’s a winner anyway. Big respect goes to him as the competition was originally in his honour and the Brisbane Massive are big supporters of the podcast. A big old pile of dance music CDs will go into the post at the weekend so let me know when you get them. Enjoy!

Honourable mentions for striking poses go to:

Kev the gurner!
Kev from Germany

Props to my man Kevin for striking a photoshopped pose for the camera. A classic gurn from a classic gurner! ;)

Judgejase is in the house!
Judge Jase

Thanks to Jase for a thumbs up pose from the UK. If you’d have done a double thumbs up then you might have won! ;)

Thanks to everyone who entered and I expect more entries next time!

 Friday, April 14th 2006, 9:42 am

Ok party people. DJ Cruze is back online. Unfortunately my upgrade to version 2.0.2 of WordPress caused me a million errors so I’ve rolled back to version 1.5. The podcast feed should be working again and the new one will be online in the next day or two. Apologies for breaking everything.

Article : Planning a DJ set

 Friday, April 7th 2006, 6:00 pm

Question I get asked time and time again are “Do you plan your DJ set in advance?”, “How do you start planning a DJ set?” or “How do you know what records to play in your DJ set?” So I thought I’d take some time out to write an article on planning a good DJ set.

So what goes into planning a DJ set then?
