DJ Cruze

If you’ve never heard of Switch then you’ve been missing one of 2006′s most prolific dirty house and electro producers. Better known as Dave Taylor, Switch has been producing filthy house music for the past three or four years but 2006 has definitely been the year of the Switch remix. If dirty house music isn’t your thing then close your ears because he’s made some of the filthiest house sounds around!

Dave is a hip hop freak from Ladbroke Grove in London with an ear for tracky beats and and filthy synth basslines. He’s the man behind numerous shady records and some genius official ones. Switch has been championed by the heavy hitters in the dance music world such as Masters at Work, Gilles Peterson, Phil Asher, Rainer Truby, Tom Middleton and Ashley Beedle. His cheeky cut-up approach to production is building him quite a reputation as a consistently fresh, risk-taking quirkster who delivers quality cuts with an pinch of funk and soul combined with some deep and booming bass sounds, all of which continuously impress the underground elite.

Although I don’t always play the tougher sounds in my sets, I often drop the Switch classic “A Bit Patchy” and it will instantly blow up the dancefloor. The appeal of the Switch sound is that he makes accessible, twisted tracks that are influenced from the house sounds of Basement Jaxx, through the glitchy hip-hop of Prefuse 73 via US hip-hop from the Neptunes and US house from Kenny Dope. You’ll find influences in his tunes from all dance music genres and he’s never one to pigeon hole himself.

In between all of his remixing Dave also manages to run his own Dubsided label which acts as an outlet for his distinctive dirty, glitchy house music and other twisted house producers.

Some classic Switch tunes and remixes that you should get hold of are:

• Switch – A Bit Patchy – A cheeky dirty house bootleg of The Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache”. A massive b-boy classic cut up for the modern day dancefloors.
• The Futureheads – Worry About It Later (Switch Remix) – One of my favourite indie bands gets cut up to f*ck and combined with the Switch dirty bass sounds and dirty electro drums. A filthy remix and a dirty dancefloor favourite.
• Fatboy Slim – Champion Sound (Switch Remix) – Norman’s reggae-fueled hip-hop joint gets twisted into an old school monster!
• Spank Rock – Bump (Switch Remix) – Heavy reverb, squeaking synths, bangin beats and funky horn stabs. What more can you ask for?

Do you like hip-hop? Of course you do!
Do you like scratching? Hell yeah!
Do you like the Steve Miller Band mixed in with the theme from Rocky and Louis Armstrong cut-up with hip-hop beats and some samples from the Muppets? Erm….yes!

If you like your block-rocking hip-hop then check out this weeks Essential Mix from DJ Yoda. Unfortunately it’s only online until Saturday 2nd December 2006 so get listening now. I’ve just been listening to it and it’s a fantastic mish-mash of styles. DJ Yoda is one of the best hip-hop DJs out there so go and check it out.

Even though I didn’t manage to make any money off my Nelly Furtado remix it looks like a couple of internet entrepreneurs have made some money from selling my remix.

I might have to email the people involved and get a copy of the CD for myself as it looks quite professionally packaged! If only you were actually allowed to sell bootlegs and remixes of artists then I’d be a rich man! Well, maybe not that rich but it would have been a nice little Christmas present! Isn’t the internet a great place for media if people treat my remix as an exlusive? In my opinon, the more people that hear my sounds, the better.

I thought I’d better apologise for not updating my website very often over the past couple of weeks. I know that some people find my weekly chart useful but it doesn’t exactly make for an exciting website now does it?

After my computer crashed I have spent a bit of time trying to get it up and running again but I haven’t managed to finish it off. I’ve still got to find some of the nice delay and reverb VSTs on my back up hard drive and then it’ll be good to go. The podcast is about 3 weeks late now and I’m hoping to get episode #24 online at the weekend.

Work has been crazy for me too so I’ve not really had time to do anything musical for the past month. Hopefully I’ll get back into the swing of things in the next couple of weeks running up to Christmas as my harsh deadlines are due to end this week. Talking of Christmas, it’s almost time for the annual DJ Cruze Christmas Podcast so I’d better get another Christmas bootleg going.

Has anyone got any good ideas for what they’d like to be remixed? How about The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl with their Christmas classic “Fairytale of New York”? Or maybe even Wham’s “Last Christmas”? As promised last week here is the b side of an old mix I did way back in 1994. You’ll find plenty of old tunes here and lots of cutting and scratch. I’ve tried to master the MP3 as best I could but it’s still a bit crackly with some heavy (i.e. distored!) bass in parts.

There are plenty of classic house tunes on here and it’ll make you smile if you’re old enough to remember them. If you’re not, then make sure you still download it as the tunes are fantastic! Sorry guys and girls but this week’s podcast has been delayed due to the untimely death of my PC. My hard drive finally gave up and has died a horrible death. Thankfully I was wise enough to keep all of my important data on a second hard drive so I don’t think I’ve lost much of my work or tunes. I now have to go through the laborious task of reinstalling all of my music software so I can record the podcast again. This may take a few nights but hopefully I’ll be sorted for the weekend.
