News : Nelly Furtado Remix Fame Part II
I meant to make a post about my Nelly Furtado remix being sold on ebay last week but didn’t manage to because of being struck down with a stomach bug. Now that I’m fit and healthy I thought I’d tell you what I thought.
People asked whether I was annoyed that these people were selling my work without my permission and I have to admit that I’m in two minds about it. Yes, obviously I’m annoyed that I’m not making any money out of it and that they have made around £15 (~ $30) profit from stealing MP3s from the internet. But part of me is really proud of the fact that they must have thought it was a professional remix and decided to include it on their bootleg remix CD. Having just googled the remix it seems that a lot of people really like it and it is even included on the “Man Eater” wikipedia page. Wow!
Personally, I decided to do the remix because I was sent a 12″ of the tune which contained an acapella and really liked it. I don’t own the copyright to the vocals so what I did was also illegal. Admittedly I didn’t try and sell the remix but I did put it on my website for people to download as I thought it was a good promotional tool for me and my music productions. It has certainly drawn a lot of attention to my website and to me as a DJ so for me that can only be a good think for raising my profile.
So while I think it’s good that these guys thought the mix was worthy to go on a CD with a remix from Axwell and I do agree that they shouldn’t be making money from it. Hell, with the amount of downloads I have had from the website, I’d have made some good money if I could have charged even £0.50 for each download! Hopefully I’ll get some money from my future remixes in 2007. Watch this space!

And, funnily enough, Google adds its own wisdom by suggesting to replace the search for “nelly furtado funkfinders” with “nelly furtado fundfinders”… oh irony!
Looking forward to hearing new 2007 remixes from the Funkfinders!

It’s bad they didn’t get permission from you to include your remix on the CD.
You should be entitled to some of the ££$$ for all your hard work.
Glad to see your remix on the wikipedia page though – certainly proves people love it including myself, actually I had it playing this morning on my way to work
Pete.

Yeah, it would have been nice to have been asked but the problem is that I only own the copyright of the instrumental and don’t own any rights to the vocal. Nelly Furtado’s record company and publisher obviously own them. It’s nice to have someone like the remix so much that they’re willing to bootleg it though!

Hey Marc,

did you read this:
Maneater (DJ Cruze Funkfinder Remix) – Nelly Furtado. I’ve never heard of this guy, but it seems like he might be German. Either way, this is an AMAZING club mix, and not crappy like the slow hip-hop remix featuring Lil Wayne and some idiots in the background yelling “Yup!” like they’re Dem Franchise Boyz or something.)

well…he might be right when he says “…he might be a german” you´re almost german!
Take care and be good
merry christmas to you and of course to your awsome podcast-voice
cheers

Yes, I’ve posted a comment a while ago to thank them for their kind words. You’ll see that I’ve told him that I’m not quite a German although maybe I’m an honorary one because I’ve been DJ’ing there for so long.
Merry Christmas to you too!
