News : Nelly Furtado Remix Fame Part II

 Monday, December 11th 2006, 5:30 pm

I meant to make a post about my Nelly Furtado remix being sold on ebay last week but didn’t manage to because of being struck down with a stomach bug. Now that I’m fit and healthy I thought I’d tell you what I thought.

People asked whether I was annoyed that these people were selling my work without my permission and I have to admit that I’m in two minds about it. Yes, obviously I’m annoyed that I’m not making any money out of it and that they have made around £15 (~ $30) profit from stealing MP3s from the internet. But part of me is really proud of the fact that they must have thought it was a professional remix and decided to include it on their bootleg remix CD. Having just googled the remix it seems that a lot of people really like it and it is even included on the “Man Eater” wikipedia page. Wow!

Personally, I decided to do the remix because I was sent a 12″ of the tune which contained an acapella and really liked it. I don’t own the copyright to the vocals so what I did was also illegal. Admittedly I didn’t try and sell the remix but I did put it on my website for people to download as I thought it was a good promotional tool for me and my music productions. It has certainly drawn a lot of attention to my website and to me as a DJ so for me that can only be a good think for raising my profile.

So while I think it’s good that these guys thought the mix was worthy to go on a CD with a remix from Axwell and I do agree that they shouldn’t be making money from it. Hell, with the amount of downloads I have had from the website, I’d have made some good money if I could have charged even £0.50 for each download! Hopefully I’ll get some money from my future remixes in 2007. Watch this space!

It has been a while since the last podcast but eventually episode #24 should be appearing in your podcatcher! Apologies for the delay but I don’t think it is my month. The hard drive crashed on my PC, my iPod has died, work has been crazily busy and I’ve managed to pick up a stomach infection. What fun!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the tunes this week. There is plenty of funky house and dirty electro to keep you going for the next week or two. My PC is back up and running again so you should get another podcast before Christmas and it will contain the infamous DJ Cruze Christmas bootleg on there. Hopefully it’ll be phat and funky!

Don’t forget to rate this podcast so I know what you like and don’t like. Run your mouse over the stars underneath the title of this podcast and it allows you to rate it. If you like it then give me a big phat 10. If it’s terrible then give it a 1. Go on… you know you want to vote!

As always I love to hear your feed back on the show. Contact me using the form provided and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. I’m always looking for new tunes to play on the show so if you’re an up and coming producer who’s looking for some exposure then let me know and if I like the tunes, I’ll play them.

Here is the tracklisting for the show:

  • DJ Cruze big tunes:

As it is almost Christmas I thought I’d better give you an early Christmas present and post a link to last year’s Christmas bootleg. In case you have forgotten, I did a quick and cheeky cut-up version of Nat King Cole’s fabulous “The Christmas Song” on last year’s Christmas podcast and it seemed to be enjoyed by a lot of you. It is one of my favourite yuletide songs and it reminds me of being young and getting all excited in the run up to Christmas.

It was a pretty simple bootleg that I did in Ableton Live so don’t expect anything too fancy! I looped up some samples from The Christmas Song and added some beats, sleigh bells (listen carefully and you’ll hear them) and a simple synth bassline. This years bootleg might be a bit more funky but first I’ve got to decide on which track to bastardise. Wham’s “Last Christmas” is a current favourite and Cliff Richard’s “Miseltoe and Wine” is a contender so get ready for some Christmas fun!

I should have posted it up for you earlier in the year (or at the end of last year) but I thought I’d give it to you now for a bit of festive fun for your office Christmas party. If anyone manages to get their boss to dance to it then I’d like to see photos!

News : A Christmas present for your favourite DJ?

Diamond turntable ring

Are you stuck for what to buy your beloved DJ partner for Christmas? Look no further than this 18kt gold turntable ring encrusted with black and gold diamonds. It looks like it’s made by one of the most famous jewellers in America, Jacob Arabo. He makes custom jewellery for all of the famous rappers, singers and producers in the hip-hop world so expect to see Pharrel Williams or P-Diddy rocking this bling at a party in the near future.

But seriously, who would wear it? It’s horrible! So don’t go buying it for me because you love the podcasts so much!
