Podcast #28 is here and it is time to chill out a little bit after the Christmas holidays. I’ve been sent loads of great soulful tunes over the past few weeks and thought I’d share a few of them with you at the start of the show. Most of the time I’m playing a bit tougher or funkier in the clubs but it’s nice to play some warm-up tunes to start off the show.

Another thing that you guys and girls might have noticed is an improvement in sound quality. I’ve decided to see how my bandwidth holds out when I give you 128 kbps MP3s instead of the 96 kbps MP3s that I used to give. It does give a lot better sound quality but I’m wary of it costing me too much in bandwidth costs and also the fact that in theory people could make an edit of one of the tracks. Hopefully I do enough talking for that to not be a problem! Go out and buy the tracks if you like them!

Don’t forget to rate this podcast so I know what you like and don’t like. Run your mouse over the stars underneath the title of this podcast and it allows you to rate it. If you like it then give me a big phat 10. If it’s terrible then give it a 1. Go on… you know you want to vote!

As always I love to hear your feed back on the show. Contact me using the form provided and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. I’m always looking for new tunes to play on the show so if you’re an up and coming producer who’s looking for some exposure then let me know and if I like the tunes, I’ll play them.

Here is the tracklisting for the show:

  • DJ Cruze big tunes:
    • Mark Picchiotti – No More Pain (Krisco Vox) – Blue Plate Records
    • Christian Hornbostel – Joy (Bobby Blanco and Miki Moto Remix) – Housepacific Recordings

  • DJ Cruze chart rundown:
    • Francesco Diaz – Life Is Too Short (Full Vocal Mix) – Senorita Records
    • Sach & Bomba – Livin’ The Music (Vocal Club Mix) – Endulge
    • The Star Alliance – He’s A Runner (Wesley Clarke Remix) – Sporting RiffRaff Records
    • Big Brovaz – Big Bro Thang (Soul Seekers Dub Mix) – Genetic Records
    • Rogue Traders – Way To Go (Dada Mix) – Ariola

News : Awesome turntablist

 Friday, January 26th 2007, 12:00 pm

I’ve never posted a You Tube video on my site before but I couldn’t resist after seeing an amazing turntablist on the Create Digital Music website this morning. It’s the work of the amazing Dutch turntablist Kypski who is a 6 times champion of the Dutch National Scratch competitions. If you’re not aware of C-Mon and Kypski then you’re in for a treat if you like scratched up, mad hip-hop tracks. They’re a 4 piece band from Holland that make incredible hip-hop tracks including live instruments and plenty of scratching action. You have to check out their absolutely amazing funky track Shitty Bum. The video is superb too so make sure you watch it all, especially the breakdown.

So what Kypski has done is to take a version of The Beatles classic “Michelle” and scratched the lead line using a tone record. C-Mon and Kypski produced a range of these records that have octave tones around a record in order to aid turntablists and their scratched music creation. He has mad turntablist skills as you’ll see. Here’s the video:

News : My studio

DJ Cruze studio picture 1
After posting about German DJs and their record rooms, my good friend Thorsten aka DJ Ceelight, asked me to post pictures of my studio and answer the same questions as the DJs in the article were asked. So here are the pictures and questions and answers as promised.

1. Where do you live?
I live in a lovely little suburb of Manchester called Didsbury.

2. When did you start DJing?
I started DJ’ing way back in 1988 when I was 16. I got into DJ’ing because I was really into hip-hop and electro. I realised that I was a terrible breakdancer, awful at rapping and I had no art skills to do graffiti (except maybe the odd tag here and there). The only thing to do was become a DJ and learn to scratch!

3. How many records do you have?
I currently have about 2000 after I sold most of my collection. I’ve probably sold around 5000 records over the past few years but some were terrible promos that I had been sent. I’ve been sent a lot more CDs and MP3s over the past couple of years as it makes better financial sense for the record labels and promotions companies.

News : DJs and their record rooms

 Monday, January 22nd 2007, 6:10 pm

Ali Schwarz has a messy record room!
I just found this link link via one of the forums I read on a regular basis. It is lots of pictures of German DJs and their living rooms which I assume was originally published in a German magazine.

It features a lot of the big techno DJs from Germany (and Canada!) such as Ali Schwarz from Tiefschwarz, DJ Koze, DJ T from the Get Physical label, DJ Hell, Richie Hawtin and Sven Väth. It’s good to see that some of them have equally messy rooms and it is not just me that has records piled everywhere. Actually, I’ve got better in my old age and after having sold about 5000 records I’m down to only having about 3000 now!

So how messy is your studio? I’ll have to post some pics of mine so you can see it. A lot of records have been moved up into the loft so it’s not quite as untidy as it used to be.

News : Website and podcast problems

 Monday, January 8th 2007, 9:39 pm

Apologies if you came to my website and found the account suspended over the past couple of hours. It looks like I’m being hammered hard via iTunes and my podcast RSS feed was using up over 50% of the CPU time on the server my website runs on. Quite understandably, the guys at Site HQ suspended the site as it runs on shared server.

Luckily I saw the email about the suspension and managed to get everything sorted straight away. Hopefully the site will use less CPU now as the site is being cached. If you don’t know, or don’t care, what that means they don’t worry about it. Just sit back and download the funky mixes instead!
