News : More website problems
Thursday, February 1st 2007, 9:51 amOh what a week it has been. Yet again I have had problems with my website. This time I was using way over my bandwidth limit due to my podcast RSS feed being hammered by iTunes and the other podcast aggregators. So I finally bit the bullet and transfered my website to a new webhost.
The lovely Dreamhost currently serve all of my MP3s for the mixes and podcasts and I’ve now moved the site there too. Hopefully you guys shouldn’t see any difference but if you notice any problems then get in touch.
Things to note are that I have lost about 5 comments so if you feel like reposting them (…Dom, Andy P and Florian) then do so! It happened because I backed up and moved the databases and that took a couple of hours. You guys then posted after I did that so they got lost in the ether. It’s not a biggy but in case you think you’re going mad then that’s why! Also, I’ve cut down the podcast RSS feed so that it only contains 5 items rather than all of the podcasts. This will save me about 15 GB of bandwidth a month so it is worth doing from my point of view. You’ll see a difference in the podcast feed in your aggregator but all of the podcasts are still available on my website.
Now that I’ve moved the site over I should be able to start rolling out some changes that I have wanted to do for ages. I think the design is getting a bit stale and I’d like to implement a few features which will help you find the content more easily. The changes will gradually take place over the next couple of months so keep your eyes open.
Update #1: Whoops! I spoke too soon. Looks like I’ve messed up the podcast RSS feed even though it worked earlier. I’m trying to fix it now!
Update #2: Should be sorted now. Damn you mod_rewrite and gzip! Yes, I’m a geek.

Yeah, I think everything will be ok now. Looking at the site it all seems fine and it will mean that I can provide you guys with lots more content more easily!

Max, aggregator is a program people use to look at the rss feeds. iTunes, NetNewsWire, Safari etc.
Cruze, mod_rewrite is the greatest invention ever. I love it.

alright mate, sounds like a nightmare sorting out the problems with your site. theres a chris lake remix of a robbie williams tune that you may like called “she’s madonna”. i think Pete Tong has played it on one of his shows recently

Yeah, mod_rewrite is great when it works Sergio!
I’m hoping to build up some custom feeds using that and some custom PHP stuff that I’m writing for the site. It’ll appear at some point so I might be asking for advice.

You’ve mentioned that remix before haven’t you?! Sorry, your comment didn’t make it across to the new database.
Yeah, it’s a phat remix I think. He’s taken it in a very electro-house direction and although more mellow-ish, I think it works really well.

I’m re-downloading Episode 28 now…I did try yesterday but it fell over at about 60%. I’ll give you a shout if this one has any problems.

Ok Rob. It could have died yesterday because the DNS server changed where djcruze.co.uk was pointing. It should have resolved itself properly by tomorrow I think so let me know if you have any more problems.

No, a lot of traffic hasn’t come from digg at the moment but it might do in the future!
It’s a problem with how RSS works and I’m not sure what I can do other than cut my RSS feed sizes down a bit and implement some caching strategies. I’ve got lots more bandwidth to use now so I should be fine for a while.
