DJ Cruze Podcast Episode #51 - Melo - May 2009

Back once again with the renegade master DJ Cruze! Episode #51 of the DJ Cruze Podcast finally drops onto your iPod (or other MP3 player obviously!) How did I manage to let this one slip so late into May? Life gets in the way sometimes! Sorry about that.

Don’t worry though. This show is jam packed with the funkiest and chunkiest house music from my DJ box. Starting the show this week we’ve got the awesome Deadmau5 remix of Calvin Harris’ “I’m Not Alone”. You’ve obviously heard the original, given that it’s one of the biggest cross over pop-dance tracks of the moment, but Deadmau5 gives it his trademark groove and brings us something a little more laid back. I’m loving the vocoded vocals on this one. I went to see Deadmau5 at Manchester Academy last weekend and if you get the chance to see him live then do so. The man’s got far too much energy given that he’s wearing a mouse head!

Big tunes are the order of the day in this show as next up is the big track “Leave The World Behind” from the Swedish House Mafia and their honourary Dutch member Laidback Luke. Chunky house music with a big old piano breakdown. Lovely! Next up is the Eric Prydz track “Lift” which harks back to the old anthems of the 90s. Large! Then a cheeky remake of “Bucci Bag” from Vandalism with Ian Carey on his electro-house remix tip. I’ve always loved the vocal on this track and I think Ian does it justice.

Next up is a DJ Cruze exclusive with my Funkfinders Electroid remix of DJ D & Will Dawson’s new track “Do It Tonight”. I’ve not heard the original track and I was only given one sample to work with so I think I’ve taken a disco cut-up house track and moved it over into electro house territory. Let me know what you think in the comments below. After that we’ve got the big new David Guetta track “When Love Takes Over”. A huge tune which features Kelly Rowland on vocals. Expect this one to hit the charts in the next few weeks. Coming in after that we’ve got a cheeky house track from German Wunderkind Wolfgang Gartner. His track “Push & Rise” takes us towards Daft Punk with it’s pitch-corrected vocals. Does anyone else think the electric pianos have undertones of Supertramp too? Or perhaps I’m just old enough to remember them!

Phonat then rocks the mix with his heavy hitter “Set Me Free” on The Young Punx Mofo Hifi label. It’s part hands in the air anthem, part rave track, part fidget house, part cut-up disco and is all mashed together to gives us a wicked house track which transcends traditional boundaries. Phonat is a genius producer who I’d advise you all to keep a close eye on. He’s going to blow the cobwebs off dance music this year! Next up is one of the biggest tracks at the moment for me. Eric Prydz gives us another anthem with his track “Melo”. He just knows how to produce emotional house tracks. I can imagine dancing to this on the beach by Bora Bora. Awesome!

The DJ Cruze Classic this month is a great old track from 1993 by Deadly Sins called “We Are Going On Down”. It’s got a great remix from Bottom Dollar who were two awesome producers from the North-West of England. Their hands graced many a fantastic remix during the 90s. This track gives us chanting vocals, breakbeats and a big synth-stabbed breakdown. What more could you ask for in a classic house track?!

So enjoy this month’s show and don’t forget to comment below and tell me what you think of the tunes.

  1. Wow, finally!
Firstly, thanks for the shout out, I really enjoyed it, though you had some probs with my last name, but that’s okay, everybody does 🙂
About the Funkfinders remix… reminded me of Chris Lake, I don’t know why, maybe the bass line sounds familiar, but I liked it, creating this with just one vocal sample isn’t easy, you’re creative, keep it that way!
Phonat – Set Me Free (Original Mix) was new tune for me, thanks for that, gonna download it..
Pryda – Melo/Lift – !Awesome! tracks…Isn’t the first time I see these two tracks together mixed in one podcast, for example visit http://lifted-radio.co.uk/podcasts/?p=1243

    and again, Thanks!
    Keep it creative and funky!

  2. Thanks mate. Sorry about the trouble with your name. I don’t have a good grasp of the Khazikstan pronunciation of names! 🙂

Glad you like the remix. As you said it was a tough track to remix with only one sample!

Phonat track = AWESOME! His album comes out soon so can’t wait for that.

Those two Pryda tracks came out at the same time (with another called Reeperbahn) and they’re both huge. I love Melo though. I can’t listen to it enough.

  3. Hey mate,

this is one of my favorite Podcast all the time. awesome Deadmau5 Remix.
and i like all the tracks..really good.

    the classic ist fantastic.

    cheers mate

  4. Thanks Florian.

Go and see Deadmau5 if he comes to your area.
    It was a fantastic gig!

  5. Hi Mate

I was at that deadmau5 gig too! Absolutely amazing! Got a t-shirt.

Good mix – keep ’em coming.

  6. For some reason, I keep thinking that “Do It Tonight” would have made a better name for this edition of the podcast. Rest assured that, thanks to your remix of that track, it has now made its way onto my Most Wanted list. Here’s hoping on my part that Metrogroove Records don’t take too long to get that one released.

Elsewhere, I enjoyed the version of “When Love Takes Over” you played here – amidst my constant listening to the Laidback Luke and Albin Myers remixes, I somehow managed to miss that one. David Guetta has still got it, I don’t care what the haters say. Can’t say there’s a single track on this mix that I hate, although must concede that the “Leave The World Behind” one is a bit of a Marmite track for me.

The podcast may not have been on schedule, but it was worth waiting for.

  7. Nice podcast Marc

  8. hey mate,

you have the mix from Schmidts..and can you put it online on your page??

    cheers

  9. @Alex L – It was awesome wasn’t it?! Was funny when the power stopped too but he just laughed it off.

@The Grim Reaper – Naming the podcast is always random and generally based off my favourite track in the mix. I’ve heard “Do It Tonight” too many times when I was remixing it to love it! Haha! I’ll let you know when it’s released. David Guetta may be perceived as commercial but I still think he’s a good producer.

@Kai and Florian – Thanks guys. Sorry I haven’t put the mix online. I’ve been so busy with sorting out my house move that I haven’t had a chance. I’ll tidy up the recording and hopefully put it online next week for you and the Vibration crew.

  10. is the mix the full 4h long ?
would be cool when it is 4h long

  11. wow, really awesome new podcast mate…. love the track from calvin harris, very chilly!

    greets from austria

  12. yeahhh mate,

would be absolutely fantastic with the mix of Schmidts..

this would be so accept oldskool mix you us sometimes has promised 🙂 🙂

  13. yes florian is right.
and i hope we get all the hrs of this mix ))

Flo we need a location to make a new party with marc and one where we can stay as long we want:-)

  14. Just wanted to express my gratitude for what you are doing, I really ENJOY your podcasts!
this one supports me greatly while i’m writing the research paper!
totally agree with the Grim Reaper, worth waiting for 🙂
    hot hello from Russia!

  15. Reading through the blurb before the tracklist, I’ve noticed a mistake concerning Wolfgang Gartner. He’s not German, he’s American. His real name is Joey Youngman. Under this name, he used to produce much more soulful kind of house music than he does now. When he wanted to change his sound, he used the name Wolfgang Gartner to release tracks such as “Front To Back” – the new name was also used so as not to make his fans feel they didn’t matter to him anymore.

It didn’t in the end – looking at his MySpace profiles under the two names, he’s got a lot more fans because of diversifying his music.

  16. Thanks so much for the shout out Cruze, it was awesome. It was quite funny as I just thought I would give the shout out thing a go for fun and see if I got one, as my mate Harry (mentioned in the shout out) has tried about 20 times!! anyway churn out some more tunes before June 11th, I’ll need them!
    Chris

  17. @Kai / Florian: No the mix is only an hour (I think). I’ll try and get it online at the weekend. If you guys organise a party then I’ll come over and DJ – no problems.

@Alexandra – Thanks for listening and I’m glad I help you to work!

@The Grim Reaper – Haha! I didn’t do enough research did I?! I assumed he was German from the name and the “Kindergarten” record label.

@Chris Green – No problems. Say sorry to Harry that I never read his shout out. I ended up with about 300 unread emails from way back in 2007 because I couldn’t keep up with the volume. So I ended up just reading the current ones!

  18. Top Draw once again!

Highlight for me was “Wolfgang Gartner – Push & Rise” – immense tuneage, really feelin that one!

Keep up the good work! Really look forward to your podcasts every month!

    Rob Himself,

Up the road in sunny Bolton

  19. hey mate,

no mix from Schmidts online?? 🙂

    cheers

  20. @Rob – Nice one! Glad you liked it.

@Florian – Obviously not otherwise you wouldn’t have asked!

  21. Hey DJ Cruze, its me again, Max

  24. ah DJ Cruze,

I am late on the scene. Just finished listening to the latest podcast. Marc, you threw down on this one. I mean, I cannot express how pleased i was just listening through it. Words do not do justice to how much i appretiate the mixes. lol; donations to your podcast were well worth it.

    Keep Rock’n Cruze

  25. Love the Pryda tracks man!

BTW This podcast is exactly the same length as my commute, door to desk!

  26. @Joel – Thanks for the donations man and your kind words mean a lot.

@Justin – Good stuff mate. Have you not noticed me following you home so I can time the show?! Hope you’re well mate.

  27. @Kai – It’s uploaded and I’m putting it live now.

  28. @Mark, I thought that was part of the service.

  29. Well we both know this style is right up my street. I wonder if you got some insiration from me 😉 Anyway nice job. I am heading to Le Mans to DJ next weekend and also hope to be in Sweden shortly.

If you like this style, check out my MayDay podcast. Im sure youll like it. 20k downloads for me in May. 2Tb of data!

  30. @Justinhj – Of course!

@Utopia – I’ve got better things to do than copy your mixes mate! 🙂

  31. Even if i failed to support you as i promised (sorry!)…

… i just picked this track out to show your style to someone and finally noticed it was a birthday-track for me (14.05).

Just something childish in an over-tracked world! 😉
    Yours, Uli
